Preservation Detroit’s extensive archives contain more than 300 books about the history, architecture and neighborhoods of Detroit, as well as photos, slides, blueprints, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and document collections related to specific buildings and neighborhoods.

Allen Wallace and Marilyn Florek founded Preservation Wayne (now Preservation Detroit) in 1975 as part of a student movement protesting the demolition of historic buildings in the Wayne State University neighborhood. Their efforts resulted in one of our first “saves”, the home of David Mackenzie, a founding figure in Wayne State University’s history. Mackenzie was the principal of Detroit Central High School (now known as “Old Main”, and the head of Detroit Junior College, the College of the City of Detroit, and then Wayne University, which became Wayne State University.
