Endangered Historic Places

The aim of the Endangered Historic Places project is to focus positive media attention and boost local efforts to protect a range of threatened or forgotten places throughout the city. Advocating for these places is a prime objective of our mission.  The success of the Endangered Places Program is based on the efforts of our members and donors, volunteers, local supporters, and organizations who actively advocate for saving Detroit’s historic places. With this list we are hoping to form partnerships and find solutions to save these significant threatened places across Detroit. Some of the places listed are already undergoing renovation efforts. Their existence on this list is to bring awareness to those efforts and showcase how threatened structures can be transformed into awe inspiring structures again while providing updates on the renovations.

Criteria

We consider several factors when evaluating a site for potential inclusion on the list, including:

  1. historic significance,

  2. local (community) support for preservation,

  3. whether there is a local group engaged in its preservation,

  4. the urgency of the threat, and

  5. potential solutions to that threat.
