Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What time do the tours start?
A: Our Saturday tours begin at 10:00 AM. It is advised to arrive 10 minutes early to get checked in so the tour can start on time. Please note that specialty tours may begin at a different time; always check the Eventbrite tour listing for the departure time of your desired tour.
Q: Where do the tours begin?
A: All of our tours depart from different starting locations. Please check the Eventbrite tour listing for its departure point.
Q: How long are the tours?
A: Most of the tours are 2 to 2 ½ hours long and vary depending on the size of the group or other circumstances. Some specialty tours run longer – check the tour description for more information.
Q: What if I am running late or run into traffic?
A: Generally, the tours stay close to the start location at first so you should be able to find us near the departure point.
Q: Where do I park?
A: There are several parking garages available near all tour locations. Metered and free on-street parking are also available; be sure to check the on-street signs or meters for hours enforced. Remember that the parking meters in Detroit are usually set to allow only a 2-hour maximum and our walking tours usually take longer. You can feed the meter using the ParkDetroit app.
Q: What if there is bad weather?
A: Our tours run in rain or shine (bring umbrellas for light rain) but we will cancel (and reschedule) for the safety of everyone if the weather is severe and threatening. You will receive an email sent to the address used in the original point of sale.
Q: Can I bring my children along?
A: Families are welcome; however, the tours are designed for audiences 12 years and up given their duration, distance, and content.
Q: What if I have to leave the tour early?
A: Just let one of the guides or shepherds know so we don’t start looking for you and we can help point you in the right direction.
Q: What is the refund policy?
A: We are happy to reschedule or issue a refund if you are unable to attend your Saturday morning tour; however, please note that Eventbrite retains its processing fees. Private tours require a 25% non-refundable deposit. While the deposit is non-refundable, we are happy to apply it to a rescheduled date.
Q: Should I wear anything special?
A: Comfortable walking shoes are a must as you will be walking between 1-3 miles depending on the different tour routes. Be sure to wear seasonal layers as the weather may change and get hotter or colder as the tour season progresses.
Q: Are there any restrooms on the tours?
A: Most tours have a restroom at or near the beginning of the tour, but some (ex. downtown walking tour) have limited access to restrooms once the tour is underway.
Q: Are we supposed to tip the guides?
A: Tips are not required but are always appreciated! Our guides are all volunteers and are not compensated by Preservation Detroit. It is entirely up to you whether to tip or not.
Q: What if I would rather have a private tour instead of a group tour?
A: We’d love to take you on a private walking tour! Leave a message by phone at (313) 284-9278 or email info@preservationdetroit.org and we’ll be happy to arrange a date and time.
Q: Can I just show up and pay on the given day of the tour?
A: To ensure the tours are not overcrowded and that everyone can hear, we prefer that you register in advance on Eventbrite. This is the best way to avoid potential disappointment if a tour is full or (occasionally) canceled.
