Facadectomy 101

Façadism or facadectomy is the act of retaining the façade of a building while constructing a new internal structure behind or within the original front facing elevation’s shell. This intervention can result from a compromise reached by the developer and the local historic commission or preservation community. Occasionally, new development does not take place and the original building is demolished while the façade remains supported by scaffold.

Our Statement on the Hotel Ansonia and Atlanta Apartments

We were alerted yesterday in Facebook posts by Mark Hall and others that crews were on site at the Ansonia / Atlanta Apartments. The very same structures that Olympia slated for demolition earlier this summer. Preservation Detroit worked closely with our partners in the city and all of YOU to raise awareness about the importance of the historic fabric of the Cass Corridor and to protect these buildings with an interim historic designation.

UPDATE: A Stay of Demolition For Corktown's CPA Building and What You Can Do Now

UPDATE: On Thursday, Nov. 17, the Planning & Economic Development Committee meeting voted to approve an interim historic district for the CPA Building. Over a dozen community members and business owners showed up to speak out against the proposed demolition and talk about the importance of saving historic structures for strong neighborhoods and local economies. The proposed designation now goes to the full City Council and is likely to be on the agenda on Tuesday, Nov. 22.
